Am now fairly convinced that “first time going out in Montauk syndrome” is simply a condition I have been passing onto my friends since I had my own first episode at the Sloppy Tuna (may she RIP) in 2011.

A weekend where I never stopped laughing… let’s do it again next year, Buckley girls.

Tomorrow, October 13th, Eltie Takes the Lead: A Guide Dog’s Tail arrives in bookstores! 🐾 Illustrator: @ziyuechen

Three years ago, I started writing a children’s book from the perspective of the one who knows my daily life best: my guide dog, Eltie. In the book, Eltie walks kids through a day in his life, showing how he helps me get where I need to go, what his job really looks like, and why I, as a blind person, rely on him. Kids also learn how to recognize a service dog and how (and how not) to interact with a working dog out in the world.

My goal was for blind kids to see themselves in this book, and for sighted kids to enjoy learning about something that might feel unfamiliar or even a little scary at first. I hoped hearing it from a dog would make it feel safe, comforting, and fun!

Accessibility was at the heart of every decision. The hardcover includes tactile images on select pages, including one with tactile braille, so kids can experience the story with their hands as well as their eyes. I also narrated the audiobook myself, which was honestly nerve-wracking. Stepping into Eltie’s voice felt like a big responsibility, and I hope I made him proud!

None of this would be complete without the incredible artwork of Ziyue Chen, a deeply talented Deaf artist who brought Eltie to life with so much warmth and personality. I can’t see her illustrations myself, but hearing everyone’s reactions has been amazing. The cover of the book is here and I will be sharing some of my favorite pages tomorrow.

I just got back from visiting my 14-month-old niece in France, and sharing the book with her was a moment I won’t forget. Watching her light up at Eltie made three years of work feel worth it all over again.
