Thank you for this! That external rotation of the shoulder opens the chest, which brings more resonance. I love the ways you demonstrate setting your hands on the flute. ❤️

Do you know Tim Day and Robin McKee, the flute couple? Did you know they are retired from SFS?

Very interesting. Who would think that the right arm could affect the resonance of the flute!

I can’t believe we lost Carl David Hall (piccolo and flute Atlanta Symphony) 10 years ago.

I’ve been struggling with my lower rh fingers. And forearm/shoulder pain. Going to try some more external rotation now. Thanks!

GRATITUDE for this! 😍 Sould there be a delicate curve of the fingers over the keys! I try to aim for the tips of my fingers but often land on the pads. Plus, I have never given thought to the EXTERNAL rotation of the shoulder!

My right ring finger, R3, sometimes freezes or locks and it can be a real problem. It tends to happen more in colder weather when my hands and fingers are “slipping” and I feel like I’m holding the instrument tighter.

Thank you for sharing! I’ve been struggling with RH position lately and this gives me a lot of new things to try and think about!
