Playing the great alto flute solos with the Houston Symphony when I was 2nd flute - 3 pieces: Rite of Spring, Daphnis, The Planets - was a lucky break for me. It gave me experience and confidence and allowed me to be heard as a soloist. The flute section when I joined was so welcoming and kind from the first moment: Byron Hester, Lynette Mayfield, Carol Slocumb- and it was great to meet Dave Colvig, the retiring 2nd flutist. He worked on all my instruments during my trial week and got them playing great! And then when I got the job and bought this wonderful Haynes alto, he worked on it and added this clever little adaptation. He had been the person in the section who played alto on pieces like "Daphnis" - and that is why that unusual contract set-up passed to me. You never know what small opportunities will be important -- I put everything into making the very best sound I could whenever I played it - I figured out how to make it project well, and I think this directly helped me win my dream job as principal flute not long after. I've missed playing it as much as I did in those days, so I love using it on my jazz and rock recording projects or anything that comes up. by @araleeflute
