Happy birthday to Winnifred Eaton, an early figure in Asian North American literature. Born in Montreal in 1875, Winnifred published over 200 novels, short stories, and screenplays and is best known for her works published under the Japanese pen name “Onoto Watanna,” a controversial persona that she adopted for more than two decades.

To celebrate her 151st birthday, take some time to explore the Winnifred Eaton Archive, an extensive and fully searchable digital archive of her works and life, directed by our Editor-in-Chief, Mary Chapman. And stay tuned for an upcoming peer-reviewed forum dedicated to the works of Winnifred’s sister, Edith Eaton (also known as “Sui Sin Far”) in a forthcoming issue of Canadian Literature.
