๐‚๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐š๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ! We are now accepting articles (6,000โ€“8,000 words) and interviews (7,000โ€“9,000 words) for a forthcoming special issue, "Using and Building Archives of Difficult Pasts," guest-edited by Chandrima Chakraborty and Amber Dean.

๐’๐ฎ๐›๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐ž๐š๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ž: August 1, 2027, 9:00am (Pacific Time)

"Literary and cultural studies scholars have always relied on archives of various kinds for research purposes, but it is striking how many of us are being pulled, often late in our careers, into the work of archive-๐‘๐‘ข๐‘–๐‘™๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘›๐‘”. We (the guest editors) have found ourselves compelled into service as amateur archivists in recent years, in large part because of our research and relationships with communities seeking greater recognition, documentation, and public education about historical traumas or mass violence and the ongoing disavowal or erasure of what we are (imperfectly) calling โ€˜difficult pasts.โ€™

This special issue on using and building archives of difficult pasts aims to engage literary and cultural studies scholars, artists, and archivists in conversations about why and how we use and build such archives in our scholarly and/or creative work. For this special issue, we seek essays that demonstrate how archives of difficult pasts are relevant to Canadian literature, Canadian history, and Canadian creative artists.โ€

๐Ÿ–ŠโœจCall for Papers! We are now accepting papers between 7,000-8,000 words (in either English or French) for a forthcoming special issue, "From One Solitude to Another: Dialogues around Queฬbeฬcois Literature, Indigenous Literatures, and CanLit," guest-edited by Marie-Andreฬe Bergeron and Sarah Krotz.

"[W]e propose to open a series of cross-pollinating discussions between anglophone and francophone, Indigenous and settler scholars, guided by these broad questions: What is the relationship between Indigenous, Queฬbecois, and Canadian literatures? Should Queฬbeฬcois literature be considered within the framework of CanLit, or does its autonomyโ€”paradoxically reinforced by its exclusionโ€”remain its true political and critical strength? How do Indigenous literatures extend, complicate, and challenge these more recent national imaginaries? What models for relationship-building and dialogue across solitudes should we be cultivating as scholars of these literatures?"

Submission deadline: Dec. 15, 2026 (PT)

Call for Papers! We are now accepting articles (6,000โ€“8,000 words), interviews (7,000โ€“9,000 words), and graphic essays for a forthcoming special issue, "Truth or Dare: Canadian Auto/Biography," guest-edited by Melissa Jacques.

Submission Deadline: January 31, 2027 (PT)

"In 2022, Canadian Literature published a special issue on Canadian comics based on '80 Years and Beyond,' a two-day virtual symposium hosted by Western University. Both the conference and the special issue showcased the rich history of comics in Canada, from the Golden Age of Canadian comics (1940โ€“1946) through to the explosion in independent comics in the late twentieth century and beyond. In their introduction, guest editors Candida Rifkindย and Zachary J. A. Rondinelliย acknowledged the practical limitations of representing Canadian comics in a single issue and called on others to continue working toward a 'reorientation of the Canadian comics conversation, whichย has long languished in the rhetoric of nationalism and patriotism' (9). This special issue on comics aims to answer their call while, at the same time, focusing on comics that fall under the rubric of life writing, broadly conceived. One guiding premise of this special issue is that comics are intrinsically suited to telling stories about lived experience that challenge narrative conventions governing time and space."

As we head into the long weekend, weโ€™re continuing to celebrate Anne Carsonโ€™s Nobel Prize in Literature win this week by revisiting some pieces from our archives, including a 2003 special issue of ๐ถ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘Ž๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘Ž๐‘› ๐ฟ๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘ข๐‘Ÿ๐‘’ dedicated exclusively to her work (#176). Beginning with an interview between Carson and Kevin McNeilly (in which they discuss her poetry, the notion of audience, and the chaotic nature of writing), this issue also features pieces by Robert Stanton, Ian Rae, Tanis MacDonald, Andre Furlani, and Jes Battis.

In issue #241 (2020), Helena Van Praetโ€™s โ€œWriterโ€™s Writer Revisits Authorship: Iteration in Anne Carsonโ€™s ๐ท๐‘’๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›โ€ explores how ๐ท๐‘’๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›: ๐‘ƒ๐‘œ๐‘’๐‘ก๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ, ๐ธ๐‘ ๐‘ ๐‘Ž๐‘ฆ๐‘ , ๐‘‚๐‘๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž (2005) engages with the notion of agency in authorship. Van Praet looks at how Carsonโ€™s revision of the authorial voice ultimately requires the readerโ€™s critical intervention as it showcases the limitations of overt authorial control.

In Geordie Millerโ€™s โ€œโ€˜Shifting Groundโ€™: Breaking (from) Baudrillardโ€™s 'Code' in ๐ด๐‘ข๐‘ก๐‘œ๐‘๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘”๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘โ„Ž๐‘ฆ ๐‘œ๐‘“ ๐‘…๐‘’๐‘‘โ€ (#210-11, 2011), Miller uses Baudrillard to understand the tensions between interiority and exteriority experienced by Carsonโ€™s protagonist, as well as the anxieties about the link between representation and reality.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we're reflecting on three pieces from our archives that each take up a different relationship between story, testimony, and land. Across these pieces, story becomes a way of reckoning with who is heard, what is remembered, and how colonialism continues to influence relationships to land and belonging.

Swipe through to read them, and let us know which one speaks to you in the comments.

Happy birthday to Winnifred Eaton, an early figure in Asian North American literature. Born in Montreal in 1875, Winnifred published over 200 novels, short stories, and screenplays and is best known for her works published under the Japanese pen name โ€œOnoto Watanna,โ€ a controversial persona that she adopted for more than two decades.

To celebrate her 151st birthday, take some time to explore the Winnifred Eaton Archive, an extensive and fully searchable digital archive of her works and life, directed by our Editor-in-Chief, Mary Chapman. And stay tuned for an upcoming peer-reviewed forum dedicated to the works of Winnifredโ€™s sister, Edith Eaton (also known as โ€œSui Sin Farโ€) in a forthcoming issue of Canadian Literature.
