Series: Summer Escapes-North Italy🇮🇹

If you are not enjoying your Barolo, you are probably drinking it wrong.

Barolo is one of Italy’s most famous wines — but are you actually serving it the right way?

❌ Wine Aging: Not every Barolo needs decades of aging. Some are made to be enjoyed younger, while others have serious ageing potential. Don’t assume every bottle needs to sit in your cellar for 10+ years.

❌ Wine Service Temperature: Not “room temperature” if your room is 24°C. Serve Barolo at 16–18°C. Too warm and the alcohol takes over; too cold and you mute its aromas and tannins.

❌ Wrong glass: Use a large, wide-bowled glass. Barolo is made from Nebbiolo and has intense floral and aromatic complexity. Give those aromas room to open up.

So the next time you open a Barolo DOCG, remember: age, temperature and glassware can completely change how this Italian red wine tastes.
I shall continue with my visit to this wine region, and share more about Barolo wines. Stay tuned!

No they don’t need to be aged. Wonder where you got that from. It’s a wine 🍷 not a brandy. Any decent glass works but the only thing I think your advice is valuable is temperature. It definitely tastes better at 18 or 22 s degrees depending on the outside temp.

A little chill and you’re not tasting the alcohol.

Roomtemperature is not 16-18 degrees. Its either roomtemperature or its 16-18 degrees Celsius.

Barolos are delicious. I tend to have the view they need to be aged but perhaps I am wrong in that regard

Always full of good advice. I have my two Barolos, the ones for now and the ones for later. Always drink them at 18 degrees on a big glass. Cheers🍷🍷

Have you experienced a similar disappointment with Barolo wine and later realised you made a mistake while drinking it improperly?
