One of the earliest things you can learn about life is that everything is not necessarily about right or wrong.
Sometimes, it is right and right. And sometimes, it is moral and moral. Sometimes, two people can have completely different positions and both still have valid reasons for seeing things the way they do.
I think we (hallofus!) are too quick to bring every disagreement into a jury. Somebody must be the villain, and somebody must be the victim.
And social media has made this even worse. We see a 30-second video, a screenshot, one person's version of a story and suddenly everybody is a lawyer, judge and jury...
But sometimes, you simply do not have enough information to take a side. And even when you eventually hear every side, you may not necessarily arrive at a clear "right" or "wrong."
Sometimes, you just arrive at a better understanding of why everyone did what they did. That right there, is the difference between understanding and agreeing.
You can understand someone's perspective without endorsing their actions. You can acknowledge that someone's reason was valid without invalidating how another person feels.
You can recognise that someone had a point without concluding that they were completely right.
Life is complicated like that.
There are situations where loyalty conflicts with honesty. Compassion conflicts with accountability. It just further emphasizes context specificity.
And sometimes, both sides are defending something that is genuinely important to them. That is where I think perspective becomes important.
Not necessarily to help you decide who is right, but to help you understand what you are actually looking at.
Because sometimes, after hearing every side, the wisest conclusion is not "I know who is wrong," it is simply "understanding."
And most times, that is enough. You don't have to take every side. You don't have to participate in every argument. You don't have to make a moral battle of every situation.
Sometimes you can understand the situation, decide where you stand, and leave it there.
Some situations just require perspective.
And some, quite frankly, require you to mind your business. 🥂
