‘Amid rising nationalism, worsening inequality, war, mass migration and the escalating climate crisis, the sixteenth edition of Manifesta opened in four cities across the Ruhr, a post-industrial region in western Germany. Conceived in the early 1990s in response to the political and socio-economic realities that emerged in the wake of the Cold War, the European Nomadic Biennial is particularly attuned to the connections between global instability and civic decline. Under the direction of an interdisciplinary team made up of eight Creative Mediators, Manifesta 16 builds a politics of community encapsulated in the image of Trümmerziegel (“rubble bricks”) “salvaged by local people in the 1940s”: “fragments of an old world that were used to build anew”. Having burrowed into the fabric of the Ruhr, it aims to become an “incubator for change” and “a transdisciplinary mechanism for urban and cultural reactivation”.’
