2 months agoWhen I get that Life360 alert that he’s on his way home , I give him a few minutes, then I’m checking in: How was your day? Are you okay? Did anything happen? I ask because I know what he’s been through. My son has experienced mental, physical, and emotional harm in a place where he was supposed to be safe—school. So even now, in his last year and making Honor Roll, I still ask. Because our children can accomplish amazing things and still need us to advocate for them. They can smile, say they’re fine, and still be holding something inside. So when this autism mom asks, “How are you?” I really need to know. I’m listening to the words, the silence, and everything in between.
2 months agoYes; there are so many ways our kids communicate beyond words! I have learned to tune into all the methods our daughter Nai uses ❤️ from her AAC device to spoken language & gestures.
2 months agoThis hit me. 🥺💛 Sometimes How are you doing? holds so many questions underneath it. When the words do not always come, you learn your child in a different language. Their expressions, their sounds, their movements, their patterns, even the smallest changes. There is something so deep about knowing your child that way, while still wishing sometimes they could simply tell you what their heart is holding. 💜💙💚🧡
