Moms of Autism — I’M LOOKING FOR 3 VERY SPECIFIC CAREGIVER STORIES 💜 I’m currently developing our October Caregiver Issue, and this month we’re exploring one question: What has caregiving cost you and what has it given you? I’m specifically looking for: • A mom caring for an autistic adult — What changes when your child grows up, but caregiving doesn’t end? • A mom whose career or finances changed because of caregiving — Did you leave a job, reduce your hours, turn down opportunities, change careers, or build work around your child’s needs? • A mom who gained something she never expected from caregiving — A skill. A friendship. A purpose. A different definition of success. A completely different life. You do not have to be a writer. Actually, I’d rather you simply tell me what happened in your own words. 📚 AUTISM TALES AFFILIATE TRAINING STARTS THIS THURSDAY! ❤️ What if sharing a story you believe in could do more than raise awareness? What if it could help another child feel represented, help another family feel seen… and create a little income for your own family, too? This Thursday, we’re kicking off our Autism Tales Affiliate Training inside the Moms of Autism Facebook Group. 🙌🏾 We’re starting with Super Keynell: Strong Without a Sound, the first book in our Autism Tales children’s book series, created from the stories of real children in our community. During the training, I’ll show moms how to: ❤️ Share Autism Tales authentically 💰 Earn commissions from the books you help promote 📚 Introduce the books to families, schools, educators and organizations 📱 Create simple content without feeling “salesy” 🤝 Use your existing community and relationships 🎁 Support our larger Read & Donate mission while you earn You do not need a huge following. You do not need to be an influencer. You need a story, a voice, and a willingness to share something that could matter to another family. Because Autism Tales was never supposed to be just a children's book series. Talk About It Tuesday 💜 When you are the person everyone depends on… who do you depend on? Caregiving can mean remembering the appointments, making the calls, managing therapies, advocating at school, watching for triggers, planning ahead, solving problems and carrying a thousand tiny details that nobody else even realizes need to be carried. But what happens when the caregiver needs care? Who can you call when you're exhausted? Who steps in when you're sick? Who listens when you've had enough? Who gives you permission to fall apart for a minute without expecting you to put yourself back together immediately? Some autism moms have a village. Some have one person. Some have had to create a completely different kind of village. And some may quietly be thinking… “Nobody.” Today, we want to hear the truth, not the answer you think you're supposed to give. 💬 Who takes care of the caregiver in your family? And perhaps even more importantly: What kind of support do you wish you had? Share as much or as little as you're comfortable sharing below. Selected moms may be invited to tell more of their story in the October Caregiver Issue of Moms of Autism Magazine. Autism moms know the difference between a business that says “we welcome everyone” and one that actually knows how to support our families. 💜 So instead of building the Moms of Autism Directory from a random list of businesses, we want to build it from your recommendations. Who has made life a little easier for your family? Maybe it was the barber who took his time. The dentist who didn't rush your child. The therapist who actually listened. The photographer who adapted the session. The tutor who finally understood how your child learns. The restaurant that accommodated a sensory need without making it a big deal. The advocate who helped you find your voice. 🤎 COVER REVEAL | THE CAREGIVER ISSUE Meet our October Cover Mom: Jessica Nguyen @autismtwinmommy2 This October, Moms of Autism Magazine is turning the focus toward the person who is so often standing just outside the frame: The caregiver. The mom making the calls. Remembering the appointments. Researching at midnight. Adjusting plans. Advocating. Watching. Learning. Worrying. Celebrating victories other people may never understand. And getting up tomorrow to do it again. Our October Caregiver Issue is about all of it. Not just strength. The cost. The mental load. The changed expectations. The relationships. The careers. The advocacy. The small wins that carry enormous meaning. And also what this journey has given us. “What caregiving has cost me is probably the ability to ever fully turn my brain off.” That sentence stayed with us. Because behind so much of caregiving is a mind that is constantly working. Planning. Anticipating. Remembering. Adjusting. Advocating. Worrying. Trying again. For Annemarie, caregiving also meant slowly letting go of the motherhood she once imagined, friends, sports, birthday parties, family vacations, and all the milestones she assumed would simply unfold. But her story isn't only about what she had to let go. It's also about what happened when she stopped trying to make her family fit the picture she had been given. “Eventually I started to alter things so that they worked for OUR family.” And perhaps that is one of the quietest transformations that happens in autism motherhood. We stop asking: What is this supposed to look like? And begin asking: What does my child need? What does our family need? What works for us? Along the way, Annemarie says caregiving has given her perspective. She celebrates progress differently. She trusts herself more. 📚 COULD YOUR CHILD INSPIRE OUR NEXT AUTISM TALES STORY? We’re beginning work on the next book in the Autism Tales children’s book series, and this time we’re talking about something many autism families know very well: Food & selective eating. 🍎 We’re looking for autism moms willing to tell us about their child’s relationship with food. Maybe your child eats only a handful of foods. Maybe everything has to be a certain texture, temperature, color, brand, shape, or presentation. Maybe a favorite food suddenly became a never-again food. 😩 Maybe family dinners, restaurants, school lunches, birthday parties, travel, or trying something new have become experiences your family has had to navigate differently. And maybe your child has surprised you with progress you once thought would never come. We want the real stories. Not because we want to portray selective eating as something a child simply needs to “get over.” We want to create a story that helps children feel seen, while helping families understand that eating can involve sensory experiences, predictability, communication, comfort, fear, and much more. Today, I’m looking for 3 autism moms. For our October Caregiver Issue of Moms of Autism Magazine, I want to talk about the part of caregiving we don’t always say out loud: What has caregiving cost you? And just as importantly, What has it given you? Maybe it cost you a career. A relationship. Sleep. Friendships. Financial security. Spontaneity. A version of yourself you thought you would become. Maybe it gave you a different kind of strength. A deeper relationship with your child. Patience. Purpose. A new career. A community. A version of yourself you never knew existed. Or maybe you’re still figuring out what it has given you. I don't need a polished story. I want the real one. Today, I’m choosing three mothers to talk with me about their caregiving journey for possible inclusion in our October issue. You can be raising a young child, teenager, or autistic adult. Your experience does not need to look inspirational. It just needs to be yours. Want to talk about it? Some questions are small talk. “How are you doing?” isn’t always one of them. 🤎 For many autism moms, those four words carry so much more: Are you okay? Are you happy? Did something hurt you? Did someone upset you? Is something happening inside of you that I haven’t figured out yet? And when your child cannot easily tell you, you learn to listen differently. You listen to behavior. You notice routines. You study expressions. You recognize sounds, movements, gestures and changes that other people might miss. You become fluent in the smallest details because sometimes the smallest detail is the answer. But there are still things we wish we could simply ask. And hear. Not because our children have nothing to say. But because communication doesn’t always arrive in the form the world expects. So we keep asking. We keep learning. We keep listening. And some autism moms are still holding one of the simplest questions in their hearts: “How are you doing?” Waiting patiently for an answer. ❤️ by @momsofautism
