What can van lifers do to change attitudes?

Location: Balintore, Scotland 📍
Facility: Seaboard Centre, Balintore, IV20 1UA 📍

I’m Dom (formerly Ron) I live in my van in Scotland. I’m currently working and living on the North Coast of Scotland near the village of Balintore.

They have a great set up here that is very friendly to van lifers.

The village is so picturesque too, and with many great cafes and businesses that are well worth supporting.

But what could Van lifers do to change attitudes towards van lifers across the UK so that communities see them more favourably?

Lemme know below, I’ll be reading the comments 😊 #vanliving #vanlifer #vanlife #campervan #nc500

Van lifers need to respect the community - dont dump rubbish or excrement!! NZ has banned freedom campers in many places because of they’re disgusting habits

A great little spot, I try not to annoy the locals, try to be respectful but sometimes people just hate vans, and it doesn’t matter what you do. 😢

Motorhome and campers all have there own toilets if the issuer is this then build more places to empty the toilets and problem solved surely , I for one always find a Ayre to empty my toilet responsibly

It’s like a lot of situations, one bad penny makes it worse for genuine people, it’s great that you can get support, it looks a fabulous place, don’t know about winter though. ? Good luck to you x

I live near Scarborough and I think the van lifers possibly took advantage?? They park along the seafront using more than 1 parking place. I dunno. It’s a public area/ car park not where I’d want live in my van….if I had one.

It’s maybe those with no respect that spoil it for the decent folks out there!

Honestly I think if we put all the problems together that some people have about van life lifestyles. Including personnel that live in a van . We could literally come up with a solution and maybe set better limitations or requirements about where vanlifers can park / social requirements. But I'm not sure if this is asking a lot from people. it may seem like pointing fingers and blaming someone for frustration is more favorable.

Balintore is so pretty and I love the Seabord centre for lunch etc. The views are lovely especially on a good day, we live nearby in Inverness. Lovely review from you. I think everyone should be treated well as long as they pay and contribute a little to the local area and leave no trace of rubbish in our beautiful countryside xx

I live near Scarborough and when we drive down the sea front we did see alot but not all a good amount park across 3/4 bays that want the sea view I get it but that takes the piss with the parking. I'm million percent for the people that want to live in van life but abit of respect for others around its all thats is asked for

That’s the thing if you’re living in a van or a house you spend locally. You should have a right to live as you want to unless your a nuisance but most just want to live a quiet life and don’t dump rubbish everywhere etc

I think communities struggle with the idea that life is free from financial committment when they are taxed to the hilt and struggling with work, children etc. To have vans roll in and park up blocking public spaces I’d imagine is hard for some. You did the right thing to pay for your stay in an area with facilities. Maybe allocated parking spots could be developed. I don’t know.
