Hi I’m Dom, an electrician based in Angus, Scotland. Welcome to my new home, a cottage in the Scottish countryside.

For the last 2 years I’ve lived in my campervan conversion (Ford Transit 2021 SWB) to save for this home.

It took longer than I expected but I got there in the end.

Now the work begins, as the cottage is in need of repair. This is great though as it means I can bring you along with me on my journey as I renovate this 100 year old Scottish cottage in Angus, Scotland.

“You can really see how you just put your van together in a hurry” - Laura, 2026… Me: 🤨

I’m Ron, I’m an electrician and I live in my Ford campervan conversion (Ford Transit SWB 2021) in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Recently I was messaged by Laura (@_tatted_ash_ ), an old friend who had just stumbled across my page.

Myself and Laura had been childhood friends and this was the first time I’d seen her in 20 years!

She explores the UK in her Jeep which she temporarily adapts into a micro car camper.

As well as this we had other things in common…we had both joined the UK Armed Forces around the same time, she had joined the British Army as a medic and I had joined the Royal Marines.

Amazingly, we lived this parallel and separate life all this time without even knowing it.

Laura also showcases her adventures on her own social media page, where recently she gained significant interest for speaking out about her experience as a woman serving in the British Army today…

I’m so glad we’ve reconciled and it was through the power of social media and the common interest of van life and exploring the UK.

Unemployed and homeless…
Hi I’m Ron, I’m an electrician based in Edinburgh, Scotland 📍. I’ve been living in the back of my campervan conversion for 20 months now. Rents in Edinburgh are minimum £1k/month so therefore I have saved at least this much on rent/bills.
Today is one of my last on this construction site that I have been working on since May. It is a school in the Scottish Borders and it is very nearly complete.
I am currently on “snagging” duty which means correcting or finishing of installations before the site is handed over to the customer/main contractor.

Week 2 of 8, it’s getting colder…

I’m Dom, I’m an electrician based in Angus, Scotland. I’ve been living in my van (Ford Transit 2021 SWB) for 2 years to save for my dream home.

Now that I have my dream home, a cottage in the Angus countryside, I have set to work renovating it.

I need money tho! So I have stayed working at the remote constriction site 4 hours north of my home!

It’s ok tho, the pay is good and the scenery is amazing.

I have till the end of November before another Scottish winter sets in.

Will I make it?
Will my bank account?

Vans don’t always have rear view mirrors. I haven’t checked behind me in 2 years.

Blind spots are also an issue for larger or towed vehicles.

That’s why I’ve been using the WolfBox G900 Pro.

It’s like a dashcam but also has a 4K screen (2.5k rear camera) to capture footage in real time.

I have just 8 weeks left…

I’m Dom, I lived in my campervan for 2 years to buy my dream home.

It’s a cottage in the Scottish Countryside, in the county of Angus.

I bought it for £150k but it’s in desperate need of renovation.

I can’t even live in it yet so I’ve been staying in my van outside.

I have just 8 weeks before another brutal Scottish winter sets in.

That means I need to get the house at least liveable so that I have a nice warm place to stay.

I did 2 winters in the van and I don’t want to do another.

I’m an electrician but I don’t have experience in all aspects of construction and DIY so I may need your help if you can offer it.

Please give advice if you have any. Today I discovered a huge mould stain in the bedroom, the water damage has been stopped but now I don’t know if it needs a full re-plaster or can I just treat it with anti-fungal spray?

I can’t leave the van life!

I’m Dom I’m an electrician based in Angus, Scotland.

After living in a van for 2 years I have just bought a home of my own in Angus.

It’s a 3 bed cottage that I got for £150k

It needs a total renovation. And I’m still working on the north coast of Scotland.

The renovations will cost at least £50k and I only have £20k cash.

Because the pay is so good on this site, and I’ll need the money I’m going to work a while up here and work on the house on my days off.

I have multiple contractors working away at various things too in the meantime.

Wondering how long I can go like this before I burnout!

I’ve decided to start on the roof as it has holes in it, missing tiles etc.

Can’t wait to show you all how the renovation goes!

What can van lifers do to change attitudes?

I’m Dom (formerly Ron) I live in my van in Scotland. I’m currently working and living on the North Coast of Scotland near the village of Balintore.

They have a great set up here that is very friendly to van lifers.

The village is so picturesque too, and with many great cafes and businesses that are well worth supporting.

But what could Van lifers do to change attitudes towards van lifers across the UK so that communities see them more favourably?

I’m Dom, I live in my van in Scotland. I’m currently working in the Scottish Highlands and like to get into the outdoors on my days off.

I recently discovered a Bothy in the Scottish Highlands using my HARVEY map.

HARVEY maps are specialist maps designed for land navigation and mountaineering.

The maps emphasise topographical features and clearly highlight routes that are visible on the ground.

They also feature symbols and information that is relevant to a walker rather than crowding the map with civil infrastructure and commercial interest symbols.

HARVEY nominate a map each month with September being Lakes and October Skye 🏔️.

I am currently working as an electrician in the Scottish Highlands.

I have no address as I live in my campervan full time. But how can I receive post? Usually I have it sent to a friend’s house, but she lives in Edinburgh where I normally spend my time.

Luckily she’s been forwarding my post to a public drop-box.

This meant I could receive @regattaoutdoors @regattaworkwear gift (#gifted) . I did wonder how I would manage van life away from my home town of Edinburgh but actually maybe it won’t be so difficult. Just a few more months left to go in the Scottish Highlands. And this work clothing and swim robe from Regatta will come in very handy for the winter months. I used to serve as a regular Royal Marine but now I serve as a Royal Marines Reservist in Scotland.

As a Reservist you complete military training alongside your civilian role, I’m an electrician on civi street, I also live in my campervan full-time (just to add to the adventure).

One training package I look forward to is Mountain Training, the locations and places vary but this package happened to be in the Scottish Highlands.

The training is essentially 2 weeks of practicing navigation and personal skills and drills in wintry/mountainous conditions. Each day you complete a different route, followed by a debrief and rebrief of the next day’s route, this repeats each day.

We are fortunate to be trained by some of the best mountaineers and soldiers in the world, those of the Royal Marines Mountain Leader branch.

I honestly can’t believe that I get paid to be in the outdoors and receive world class instruction like this. And all this whilst being an “ordinary” civilian for the rest of the year. And you can too, anyone can apply for the Reserves (subject to eligibility)…
