September is suicide awareness month. I want to talk about something I don’t see much awareness on- our feelings towards those who save us from suicide.
I think we know survivors aren’t always grateful to be saved from attempts, but I don’t think we grasp why, and I hate the idea of survivors being perceived as “ungrateful”. If you were so close to something you were desperate for and then it was ripped away, would you be grateful?
Being saved from an attempt doesn’t erase what caused you to attempt, it doesn’t suddenly mean you want to be alive. It’s understandable to feel resentful.
You never truly know what happens in someone’s mind or in their darkest moments.
This isn’t to say don’t save someone. It’s to show that there is some logic behind this feeling of resentment, and that if you have that feeling you are not alone or a bad person.
