For the first time in my life, I have a girlfriend.
Sounds like something a teenager should be writing.
But the truth is, I’ve never asked anyone.
I’ve never been in a relationship (or “situationship”) longer than 4 months.
31 years of being the single friend.
I’ve been lucky to share some connections along the way.
But I’ve never been able to commit or fully open up.
Maybe fear of getting hurt, or not finding the right person.
6 months ago I was feeling pretty hopeless about it all.
Modern dating is hard.
My childhood affected me more than I was admitting to myself.
I put up walls and kept people out.
I got good at being by myself.
But deep down, I always knew I wanted to find someone.
So I started going to therapy.
I started thinking more deeply about what I wanted.
Continued to put myself out there.
And never gave up.
2 months later, out of seemingly nowhere, I met someone.
She was on holiday in Vietnam and lives on the other side of the world.
After spending 4 days together, something felt different.
I felt like I could be myself around her.
I knew I had to see her again.
So we did long distance for 3+ months before we saw each other again.
Last week, after travelling Albania and Montenegro together.
I asked her to be my girlfriend.
She said yes.
And I couldn’t be any happier.
