That’s why it never looked or tasted like pizza from an actual pizzeria. It was built for a lunch line, and somehow that made it unforgettable. If you remember the crispy edges, the slightly greasy cheese, and the square-ish shape, you’re remembering one of the most universal school experiences there was. The funny part is that this meal was more regulated than it looked. In 2011, Congress blocked a USDA proposal that would have limited how much the tomato paste on school pizza could count toward the vegetable requirement. Because of that rule, just two tablespoons of tomato paste were counted as a half cup of vegetables, which sparked headlines claiming that Congress had declared pizza a vegetable.
