What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word “AMERICA”?
It can be a wide range of ideas.. some good.. some bad. For the students in Dr. Woodson’s class, they express what that means. Some say “money”…”democracy”… “white” but for Dwayne when he thinks of the word America, it makes him think “outsider”. He expresses the feeling of “I don’t belong here” because of the current societal climate and he wants to be in spaces where he feels valued.
The discussion pivots …
If segregation wasn’t based on the disdain for another group of people based on skin color, discrimination and prejudice - would segregation be a bad thing? Black folks like in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1921 better known as “Black Wall Street” flourished with Blacked owned businesses and living.. while being segregated. That was until the city was intentionally bombed by a racist white mob because of hate.
Discourse such as this happens daily in HBCU classrooms. This is one of the things that makes the HBCU experience like no other, the free expression of thought cultivated by critical thinking to challenge the status quo.
