Holding the new @hublot Classic Fusion Tributo in white gold on my wrist, the tension between past and present is palpable. In 1980, Carlo Crocco shocked Basel with a radical proposition: pairing precious gold with a utilitarian rubber strap. Forty-six years later, Hublot has brought that foundational DNA back to life, but this time, it is elevated by the absolute peak of modern manufacturing mastery.

While its yellow gold sibling plays on pure nostalgia, the white gold version adopts a completely different stance. It is more formal, more ceremonial, drawing its aesthetic energy directly from the refined discipline of classic Italian tailoring. On the wrist, the upscale 38mm case—upgraded from the original 36mm without losing its perfect proportions—feels incredibly sophisticated. The star of the show is the polished black onyx dial. Stripped completely of indices, it offers an intense, deep minimalism that contrasts sharply with the white gold case. The date window at 3 o’clock and the twelve slightly tactile, domed bezel screws remain exactly as intended in the original design language.

But whereas the 1980 original was a quartz watch, everything inside has changed. Flip the watch over, and the sapphire case back reveals a beautiful, self-winding Manufacture automatic movement, complete with an open-worked oscillating weight shaped as the iconic Hublot “H”. For this specific edition, Hublot used a black tungsten rotor, sharpening the watch’s monochromatic, highly disciplined identity.

With 100 meters of water resistance, a lined black rubber strap, and a 10-year warranty, it bridges the gap between disruptive heritage and modern horological depth. It is a stunning, sophisticated tribute to the Art of Fusion.
