ONE DAY or DAY ONE? What the fuck is “starting tomorrow?”
Consistency is boring. Until it works, then everyone wants to know how you did it.
5 years ago I feared walking into a gym. So I made the decision to invest in a personal trainer. I wouldn’t go to the gym without her beside me. I wouldn’t even go on the treadmill unless she was there with me. It took time to change that mindset.
Investing in a PT wasn’t just about increasing my knowledge, it was addressing huge anxiety. Anxiety that if I turned up to the gym and the car park was busy, best believe I turned around. I’d make every excuse possible to not show up. “I’ll go tomorrow instead”. Too often tomorrow never came.
It wasn’t until I invested in my health, something triggered in me. I found a sense of purpose and something I loved. I had no idea what training splits even meant. Looking at a machine confused me. I didn’t know what body part it trained or where to even put the weights! I was so scared of failing, I avoided it altogether. But I quickly learnt as I found something I was so passionate about. Fast forward some years and here we are, the healthiest, happiest and most motivated I’ve ever been.
It’s the first time I’ve actually looked back at my videos to compare how far I’ve come. I’ve loved the journey to get here. Whilst the physical improvements are visible, it’s far more than that…it’s the mental resilience, the determination and the desire to be 1% better everyday and turning up on the days that you don’t want to.
It’s understanding that the gym environment is about respect. Respecting we all start somewhere. We all have different goals. Different struggles. One thing I will always shout about is supporting a stranger in the gym, give them that compliment, support them on those lifts, give them a spot and learn from one another.
The best thing about fitness is, it can never be completed. Our bodies change, trends change, interests and goals change. Whatever your goal, however you feel, movement isn’t just about the physical benefits, but the psychological benefits too. [continued in comments]
