I did an art trade with the incredibly talented @wingbrah_! Here’s the “lamp” I made for him using mostly secondhand and found materials. The base is an old skateboard deck, and the light fixture was something I already had lying around.
One of my favorite things about making art from secondhand materials is that it makes creating feel more accessible and affordable. I also love how it pushes me to look at everyday objects differently and see the potential they have beyond their original purpose. There’s something really special about taking an object that already exists and giving it a completely new life through art.
For this piece, I wanted to include little details that reminded me of Corbin and his creativity. The skateboard base felt especially fitting, and I added the cigarette in the skeleton’s mouth as another small reference to him. Corbin is such a talented artist, and it was really meaningful to make something for someone whose work and creativity I admire.
I feel incredibly grateful for the community I’ve found through art. I’m lucky to be surrounded by so many talented and wonderful artists, and being around that creativity inspires me to keep making and continue pursuing art myself.
I think art is such an important part of being human, whether you create it yourself or simply enjoy experiencing it. It gives us a way to express ourselves, see everyday things differently, and connect with one another. I’m really grateful that art has brought me into such a creative and inspiring community.
