Τι είναι ένα data center και γιατί «πίνει» ρεύμα και νερό;

Κάθε βίντεο, μήνυμα, φωτογραφία ή ερώτηση σε AI τρέχει σε κάποιον υπολογιστή. Αυτοί οι υπολογιστές βρίσκονται σε data centers: κτίρια με χιλιάδες servers που δουλεύουν 24 ώρες το 24ωρο, 365 μέρες τον χρόνο.

Ρεύμα
• Οι servers καίνε ρεύμα για να δουλέψουν.
• Το ρεύμα γίνεται θερμότητα, όπως ζεσταίνεται ένα laptop, επί χιλιάδες. Χωρίς συνεχή ψύξη καίγονται, άρα μεγάλο μέρος του ρεύματος πάει στην ψύξη.
• Με το AI, πιο ισχυρά τσιπ σημαίνουν περισσότερη ζέστη και περισσότερη ψύξη.

Νερό
• Ψύξη με εξάτμιση: το νερό εξατμίζεται και χάνεται.
• Κλειστό κύκλωμα: το νερό ανακυκλώνεται. Θέλει πολύ λιγότερο νερό, αλλά συνήθως περισσότερο ρεύμα.
• Το «κρυφό» νερό: πολλές μονάδες παραγωγής ρεύματος, όπως του φυσικού αερίου, θέλουν κι αυτές νερό για ψύξη.
• Έχουν και γεννήτριες ντίζελ για διακοπές ρεύματος και δοκιμές.

Ποιος πληρώνει τα καλώδια;
• Η σύνδεση συχνά θέλει νέες γραμμές και υποσταθμούς.
• Ως τώρα, σε ορισμένα έργα επέκτασης το κόστος μοιραζόταν μισό-μισό με τον ΑΔΜΗΕ, που το ανακτά από όλους μας μέσα από τον λογαριασμό ρεύματος.
