Like many of us, I lost my father to Alzheimer’s in 2024 and my mother, also to dementia, in 2020. The poet Anne Carson and novelist Emma Cline write exquisitely about this heartbreaking process, in detail that is both painfully accurate and spellbinding… both books are remarkable.

That poem is heartbreaking. I'm guessing you'll have already read Samantha Harvey's The Wilderness? I read it when it came out, which was a long time ago now, and found it a really thoughtful depiction of dementia. X

I lost my mum at 95 last year to dementia. In spite of it, we really did have some great giggles even through it all. It was so lucky her dementia didn't take a bitter turn, she was the sweetest to the very end. Still bloody awful for her, she was so bright and beautiful

Definitely going to read this book! I too lost my beautiful mother to Alzheimer's in 2006 after a 10 year battle with this terrible disease. It was the hardest thing my brother, sister and I had ever been through.

I’ve often thought about writing a book about dementia having lived with my mother for 6 years and my sister for 4 years who both had it, but I don’t have the wherewithal to put it together so currently I just have a random selection of anecdotes. Although it can be heartbreaking, I chose to write about many of the changes in my mum’s behaviour that were touching and warm and they bring smiles to our faces when we think of her rather than tears.
