Same woman, same horse, same field on a Friday in October… the sun managing to break through the greyest skies in spite of all the bad news in the world.

It is 21 years ago this month since I lost my dear friend, photographer George Bray, who died in Barcelona, October 2005. Here is an example of his work taken at his Westland Place studio N1 in 1985 when I was a young actor.

Born in Buenos Aires, he was a gentle soul, who lived monastically, cooking one small meal a day, taking pleasure in music, landscape and faces, perhaps ahead of his time… and out of place in the brash 1980’s. He was a fan of shedding anything that was burdensome so, as the leaves fall, I feel October is his month.

So proud of @issyknopfler as Aurora in The Wayfinders (US production filming in Ireland) - Season 2 around the corner. Here becoming a stylish archer (image 3) and falling for a very wonderful fellow (image 4) as well as upholding the family tradition of medieval prancing about for a job - just mother + eldest daughter upholding it so far (image 5) mother/daughter medievals 🏰 Proud dad (image 6) the axeman on set

Meeting Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate UK 2009-2019, at the Bridport Prize. And this fantastic poem about her own mother before Carol Ann was born is a joy… her mother’s laughter echoing off the page: from the collection Mean Time 2011.

Being a hopeless gardener I planted dahlias too late, just trying to encourage this one.

I am reading Lieke Marsman, a Dutch poet/writer and Poet Laureate of the Netherlands 2021-2023, who tragically died this year aged just 35. This is her penultimate work, a meditation on living with terminal cancer (and so much more) published in her homeland in 2025 and just published here this week by @dauntbookspub, On Another Planet They Can Save Me, Lieke Marsman. A huge talent taken far too soon... a book destined to become a classic.

Like many of us, I lost my father to Alzheimer’s in 2024 and my mother, also to dementia, in 2020. The poet Anne Carson and novelist Emma Cline write exquisitely about this heartbreaking process, in detail that is both painfully accurate and spellbinding… both books are remarkable.

Meanwhile, in another century and wearing a beret that made sense at the time… here I am as Sarah Harding in BBC TV’s TO PLAY THE KING (1994) - the second series in the @bbc original HOUSE OF CARDS trilogy. Ian Richardson played the villainous Francis Urquhart. The US version was filmed in 2012.

Beyond that… I couldn’t possibly comment.
