In 2019, while I was still serving in another government agency, I found myself in Cotabato City to witness and monitor the historic plebiscite that would pave the way for the establishment of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and a parliamentary form of government in the region.
I still remember that day vividly, the blaring sirens, helicopters hovering overhead, the heavy presence of security forces, and military tanks along our route. It was a historic moment, but it also reminded me of the realities and risks that often accompany our work in areas where peace has been hard-earned.
After that experience, I remember telling myself that perhaps I would never again find myself working in a high-risk situation like that.
And yet, here I am, seven years later, now serving in another government agency, once again entrusted with a role in another historic moment for the Bangsamoro, monitoring the first-ever Bangsamoro Parliamentary Election.
There is something deeply meaningful about coming full circle. In 2019, I witnessed people cast their votes to help determine the political future of the Bangsamoro. Tomorrow, I will witness them exercise that same democratic right as they choose the representatives who will serve them in the Bangsamoro Parliament.
Tonight, more than anything, I pray for peace.
I pray that every voter will be able to leave home, go to the polling precinct, cast their vote, and return safely to their family. May everyone be able to exercise their right to vote freely, peacefully, and without fear.
I pray for the safety of our voters, election workers, security personnel, observers, volunteers, fellow government workers, and everyone who will be on the ground tomorrow.
May this historic election be remembered not for fear or violence, but for the courage of people choosing their future through the ballot.
I pray for BARMM.I pray for Mindanao.I pray for a peaceful election tomorrow. 🤲🕊️
