“Fellow travellers.”

TLDR: we went on an epic cycle, full of joy and wonder. And that’s exactly what my grandma did when she was younger. Feeling that connection to her is so special.

A longer read:
My partner and I went on the most amazing cycle a few days ago in Gran Canaria! It was incredible! Once in a lifetime kind of ride. We laughed, we nearly cried and we knew how special it was.

The day after, Jod drew me a little sketch. It was the same sketch they’d seen a few weeks before in a (large) collection of letters my grandma had written for a particular friend. The original doodle was from when she had cycled around Devon, and it featured two other people. One of those people was Joy.

Joy was a very special person to my grandma, and their love was so much more than friendship. They wrote letters, poems and stories to each other, and stayed connected for decades. Today, I see this without doubt as a beautiful love story between the two. Especially as I’d had such positive conversations about my queerness with my grandma.

If you flick through, you’ll see the photos and words capturing my grandma’s memory of this ride from 81 years ago, when she was 19.

It makes me so happy she got to adventure with her special people.

And she’s still inspiring me to keep finding the joy in adventure and each other. Even when it’s hard to get out of the door.

Grateful to @oddjodjones for scribbling my grandma’s scribble again for me.
