Long before retail aisles were packed with licensed superhero outfits and plastic masks, Halloween was an entirely different experience. A century ago, commercial costumes barely existed, forcing families to craft disguises entirely by hand using old burlap, papier-mâché, cardboard, and scrap fabric. Because these early disguises were influenced by ancient folk traditions meant to ward off wandering spirits, the finished creations often looked deeply unsettling and uncanny. Looking back at archival photographs from the early nineteen hundreds proves that simple homemade materials created far more genuine terror than modern store-bought designs. #halloween #history #vintage #creepy #spooky
