Originally released in 1971 on his debut album Just as I Am, “Grandma’s Hands” resonated deeply as an ode to Bill’s grandmother—her comforting presence, gentle correction, and lasting care. The single climbed to No. 18 on the Best Selling Soul Singles chart and No. 42 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Illustrated by award-winning artist R. Gregory Christie, the book brings these lyrics to life through rich visuals, celebrating the love, wisdom, and strength of grandmothers everywhere while tapping into the universal bond between grandparents and grandchildren.

The Withers family keeps Bill’s values alive through active community engagement:
✨ Scholarships & Advocacy: In addition to funding music education scholarships and the annual Songwriters Hall of Fame’s Bill Withers Scholarship, Marcia Withers serves on the board of the Stuttering Association of the Young (SAY). In June 2025, she accepted an award on Bill’s behalf from Generations United, advocating for intergenerational families.
✨ Restorative Community Work: Singer-songwriter Kori Withers continues her father’s compassionate spirit. She recently performed at a benefit for FreeHorse Arts, a nonprofit offering equine-assisted programs for individuals with diverse abilities.

Serving on its board, Kori honors the deep bond with nature that shaped her father’s inner life.
