Shout out to Robert Castillo and @wvvanews

A monumental statue commemorating Bill Withers was unveiled to the public on Friday.

🎼 Withers’ songs like ‘Lean on Me’ ‘Grandma’s Hands’ and ‘Just the Two of Us’ have reached the ears of many over the years. Now the statue serves as a reminder to those in Raleigh County that we can make it if we try.

“It was a very good rendering, a very good resemblance to him. I think it captured his essence. He was a very serious guy but had a great sense of humor and wit. He was always telling jokes and smiled so that showed all of that,” said Marcia Withers, Bill Withers’ widow. Marcia Withers made the trip all the way from Los Angeles for the occasion. She says Bill Withers was honored to know that younger people knew of his music and she wishes that the statue will inspire the younger generations. ✨”A hope from me is that younger people will be inspired by his legacy. The songs he wrote, the messages he conveyed in his songs. The emotion of them and the intelligence of somebody being able to write those kinds of stories in three minutes,” said Marcia Withers.

🙏🏻Thank you all for your heartfelt condolences and kind words for Bill Withers and what his music has meant to you. It has been said that Bill was one of the most influential and prolific singer-songwriters of the last century and that his soulful voice, beautiful melodies and masterful lyrics have made an indelible mark on millions of hearts and we pray his music continues to touch hearts and lives for generations to come.

Born July 4, 1938, in Slab Fork, West Virginia (population 202), the youngest of six (living) children, Bill experienced a severe stutter and was known for his inspiring candor about his stuttering journey, his down-to-earth wisdom, his sense of humor, and his unwavering support of SAY and the SAY kids.
If you’d like to honor and celebrate Bill, please consider a donation to the charities he supported, The Stuttering Association for the Young, https://www.say.org, and Food on Foot, https://www.foodonfoot.org.

Happy National Grandparents Day! 👵🏽👴🏽

Heartfelt moments often begin with timeless music and enduring legacies passed down through song, story, and service.

Bill Withers’ cherished song “Grandma’s Hands” was transformed into a deeply moving 32-page children’s book by his wife, Marcia Withers, and daughter, Kori Withers, released in July 2023.

Originally released in 1971 on his debut album Just as I Am, “Grandma’s Hands” resonated deeply as an ode to Bill’s grandmother—her comforting presence, gentle correction, and lasting care. The single climbed to No. 18 on the Best Selling Soul Singles chart and No. 42 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Illustrated by award-winning artist R. Gregory Christie, the book brings these lyrics to life through rich visuals, celebrating the love, wisdom, and strength of grandmothers everywhere while tapping into the universal bond between grandparents and grandchildren.

A Legacy Carried Forward Through Performance & Service 💛

The Withers family keeps Bill’s values alive through active community engagement:
✨ Scholarships & Advocacy: In addition to funding music education scholarships and the annual Songwriters Hall of Fame’s Bill Withers Scholarship, Marcia Withers serves on the board of the Stuttering Association of the Young (SAY). In June 2025, she accepted an award on Bill’s behalf from Generations United, advocating for intergenerational families.
✨ Restorative Community Work: Singer-songwriter Kori Withers continues her father’s compassionate spirit. She recently performed at a benefit for FreeHorse Arts, a nonprofit offering equine-assisted programs for individuals with diverse abilities.

Serving on its board, Kori honors the deep bond with nature that shaped her father’s inner life.
A book, a performance, a scholarship—this is how love endures.
