Does being misunderstood feel like an emergency? 🚨
“I stopped explaining myself when I was drowning and they criticised the way I swam.” - Source unknown
As a recovering people pleaser myself, every rumor, gossip circle or sideways glance used to crush me. When I escaped domestic violence in my early twenties and had to rebuild my life from scratch, I exhausted myself trying to explain, justify and prove my reality. The judgement and false narratives almost felt more distressing than the reality of abuse, and it was soul crushing to face mocking smear campaigns at rock bottom.
The ultimate turning point came when I decided to LET THEM (as
@melrobbins famously exclaimed in her book
@letthemtheory ). Let them judge, let them gossip, let them misunderstand… because insecure people love to project their own shadows onto others. Letting others hold their own judgement and not making it your responsibility to “prove otherwise” is perhaps the most liberating way to take your power back.
Now when noticing judgement, lies or gossip, I simply laugh quietly to myself, knowing the truth within, hold my head high and ignore the projections. IDGAF because I know and accept all of me fully. Self love really is a super power! When you learn to esteem yourself from within (through self compassion & radical honesty) and reclaim your energy from judgy energy vampires 🧿 the opinions of others start to feel irrelevant. LET THEM JUDGE. No excuses, LET THEM!
You do not need their permission or understanding to be yourself. Don’t waste your life living for the approval and validation of others. Let them misunderstand. Your peace is far too expensive to trade for approval. Give yourself permission to BLOCK OUT anyone who judged your survival rather than seeing the human doing their best. Don’t let haters keep you stuck.
You do not need to manage the perceptions of others or argue for your own innocence. The moment you stop wasting precious energy trying to control the narrative is the exact moment you take your power back.
With love,
Yaz 💛
