A Pentagon proposal tied to this year’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) is raising important questions about religious freedom and access to support for members of our military.

Military chaplains serve people across faith traditions and those with no religious affiliation. So as Congress considers protections for chaplains’ sincerely held religious beliefs, there’s another question worth paying attention to: How do we protect those beliefs while ensuring every service member can access the support they need?

Please check out Americans United’s video breaking down the issue and what the proposal could mean for service members.

If a chaplain has “seriously held religious beliefs”, s/he should counsel that “Thou shalt not kill” is a commandment, not a suggestion.

Chaplains cannot be expected to perform actions that go against their faith just because someone with a different faith wants something. Some religious rituals are reserved for a few. And even on the council side, again you cannot ask them to do something that goes against their beliefs.

Chaplains never served all. The retained the right to refuse things like communion when it violates their religion. I don't know why you want chaplains to become therapists.

if they cant provide a chaplain for each religion in every unit (which we know they realistically cannot) then this is not okay.

Seems like if you decide to pursue a career as chaplain then you should be welcoming to helping all not just a select few
