Today was Day 3 in the mountains. We had big plans for an early morning shuttle across Redfish lake and a full day hike to Benches Lakes. 5am brought 2 pups that we sensed needed a day off from hiking.
So day 3 was a relaxing day spent walking for sunrise cocoa and baked goods at Stanley Baking Co, a beautiful drive through the Challis National Forest to see the Yankee Fork Gold Dredge and a little ways past we came upon the abandoned Ghost Town of Custer, Idaho- an old mining town from the late 1800’s , abandoned in 1910 and preserved as a historic site.
We ended the day with a drive to Pettit Lake just before sunset so the pups could enjoy a clear mountain lake swim, Pizza from Papa Brunee’s and a sunset above the peaks that took our breath away .

I know the wilderness areas are yes. I can’t say if Custer City is because it closed for the season after Labor Day and we only drove by it. I know that Sawtooth wilderness has leash rules until Labor Day and then dogs can be off leash if under control after Labor Day. There are some trails that don’t allow dogs but not many. Stanley Lake doesn’t allow dogs at the beach but otherwise they are extremely pet friendly
