1. Last night, I finally met Garth Greenwell at an event at Prairie Lights! Five years ago, when I was asked to write a blurb for the Korean edition of his first novel, <What Belongs to You> I loved it so much that I wrote the blurb almost in one sitting. I never imagined we’d end up meeting here in Iowa someday! I also got my beloved copy of <Cleanness> signed, and the poetry reading by his partner, the wonderful poet Luis Muñoz was absolutely beautiful. Garth, to see you again soon! 💛

어젯밤, 드디어 프레리 라잇에서 가스 그린웰을 만났다!
5년 전 그의 첫 책 『너에게 속한 것』의 추천사 의뢰가 왔을 때, 너무 재미있게 읽어서 거의 단번에 추천사를 써 내려갔는데, 이렇게 아이오와에서 직접 만나게 될 줄이야. 내가 정말 좋아하는 책 『클린니스』에 사인도 받고, 파트너인 시인 Luis Muñoz의 시 낭독 행사도 너무나 좋았다. 가스, 또 만나용! ❤️😘

2. I visited an official Steinway piano restoration workshop and was completely overwhelmed—in the best possible way. They restore pianos that are more than a hundred years old, giving them the chance to continue their history for another generation. I was told that even a 1mm difference can completely change the sound, so every part has to be repaired with extraordinary precision and craftsmanship. Strangely, it reminded me of the process of writing, obsessing over tiny details that might completely change the whole thing. And when one of the craftsmen told me that, despite having 24 grandchildren, he doesn’t want any of them to inherit his profession… well, that part felt strangely familiar too. 😂

스타인웨이 공식 피아노 수리 공장에 가서 대감동의 물결을 체험했다. 100년이 넘은 피아노를 수리해 다시 또 다른 역사를 써 내려갈 수 있게 한다는 사실 자체가 너무 감동적이었다. 심지어 1mm의 오차만 생겨도 완전히 다른 소리가 날 수 있어서, 그야말로 장인 정신을 가지고 수리한다고 하셨다. 그게 이상하게도 작가가 글을 쓰는 과정과 비슷하다는 생각이 들었다. 아주 작은 차이가 전체를 완전히 바꿔버린다는 점에서. 그리고 손주가 무려 24명이나 되는데도 아무에게도 이 가업을 물려주고 싶지 않다고 한 점까지… 어쩐지 완벽히 같았달까.... (사장님 팔에서 피나고 있었는데 모르셨음 ㅠ말씀드리니까 귀여운 밴드 붙이고 오심...피아노 수리가 지독한 육체노동이라는 점도 대단히 존경스러웠다...)

3. A screening of my fellow writer/director Jun Li’s <Queerpanorama> I already knew I was going to like it, but it was even better than I expected. And hearing the stories behind the making of the film afterward made the whole experience even more special. Thank you for such a beautiful work, Director Jun. 🎬💜
