Leah Stewart, the @sewaneewriters director, has been fired. She & the staff, along with the contributors & faculty they welcomed, made the Sewanee Writers’ Conference the joyful & legendary gathering I’ve known it to be, one where I’ve been utterly delighted to teach while thinking things like: what wild luck is this, getting to take part in this work?

the work is beautiful & it is collective; it’s also true that Leah is one of the most thoughtful, levelheaded, astonishingly capable directors I’ve encountered in letters. A lot of y’all know what it’s like when writers gather. In groups, we attract chaos & are easily distracted & have trouble with basic logistics involving time & place. Herding cats, but make it voluble. For years, Leah’s herded us with extraordinary grace

Top Drafting Strategies from us @ro.kwon
We’re both in the midst of drafting books and these are the top things we reliably use in our process—a combination of artistic method and progress tracking. Book writing is craft and also the art of keeping oneself going. What are your favorites and what do you use?

playlists of the writing songs we’re devoted to lately! @i__rojascontreras & I both need to play a track or so on repeat, & a good writing song can easily get thousands of plays 🎶

💫 a little more about the playlist from Ingrid: I am writing a novel about violence as women receive it—in their lives, through their partners, through the State in Colombia. I always think writing requires me to go to a deep place. And these are songs that help me get there

💫 a little more about mine: I’m writing a novel about a heist of Korean art. A central preoccupation of the novel is how to move through the ruins, how to live despite & with devastation. & so, while writing, I’m particularly drawn to music that sounds as though it’s fluent in loss & sorrow & trying to fight its way toward something like joy

astonished & intensely moved by this Chiharu Shiota installation, which weaves the WWII journals of Japanese soldiers & postwar German civilians into an elaborate net made of 20 miles of red yarn 🧶 it’s up at the @asianartmuseum for another week. I’ve loved her work from afar from years, what abundance to be able to see it in person

been somewhat of a hermit lately as I try to focus on my novel but since my narrator is an artist & a thief this is research, which is also novel work ☺️ although there was no thieving, only art ☺️ okay back to my attempt at seclusion by @ro.kwon
