Let’s go! 😤
To be Kevin McGirl’s daughter, what a privilege. After decades of fighting Multiple Sclerosis, my dad is no longer suffering. His lessons and love will live on through his four children and all those he loved. My father was born in 1962 in County Monaghan, Ireland. Months after his birth, his beloved mother passed. He lived in an orphanage for months before being adopted by my Grandpa Mike and Grandma Eileen in Queens, New York. Home of the New York Mets. He grew up loved and hopeful. With the help of my mom, my dad was eventually able to find his birth family. My dad met his siblings and nieces and nephews, who spent their lives loving him from afar. The love for my dad spanned continents. He had two amazing families. What a gift. This past week, we looked through scrapbooks that he put together as a young man. Pictures that he took himself, camera propped up on self timer. What a gift to see the world through his lens at that age. There were photos of him with his parents at his graduation from Syracuse University, photos of his dog Lucky, photos of the family home, his first car, photos of his friends and family dancing in the kitchen and playing cards. Hope and life and love spilled out of the photos. It was the same hope and life and love that he poured into our family. How lucky are we. My dad’s life was filled with many challenges. And that is an understatement. The MS stole so much from him. But one thing stayed untouched- his love for family. Boy, did he love us. My dad was not well enough to attend our big wedding in June. John and I made the decision to get married first in April so my dad could attend. We had a small ceremony in the church. My father walked me down the aisle, with help from his best friend. I remember looking over at my dad throughout the mass. He couldn’t stop smiling. I’ll never forget it. We’ll have a funeral for my dad this Friday, October 23rd. Visitation from 10:30 am until 12:30 pm, mass at 12:30 pm. Church of the Holy Family in Washington Township, NJ.
When they ask, how’s it been going? This should be a fun series… 😅
