She said it funny, but there’s a very real history behind the joke. 😭👀
American slaveholders absolutely used Christianity and selected Bible passages to justify slavery, obedience, and the system they benefited from. At the same time, enslaved Black people and abolitionists also used Christianity as a source of resistance and liberation. Frederick Douglass famously drew a sharp distinction between the Christianity practiced by slaveholders and the Christianity he believed Christ actually taught.
So for me, the conversation isn’t as simple as “Christianity = slavery.” It’s about how religion can be weaponized by people in power.
Because handing somebody a Bible while you’re actively oppressing them and then telling THEM to forgive YOU is some wild work. 😭😂
