Бывший командующий армией США в Европе генерал Марк Хертлинг в эфире программы Command Post на канале The Bulwark свел последние события вокруг войны к одному: Украина бьет по России быстрее, чем Москва успевает превращать перевес в людях и ресурсах в успехи на фронте. Этим он объясняет и растущий разлад между Вашингтоном и Киевом. По предположению генерала, Путин через Уиткоффа и Кушнера дает понять, что оказался в отчаянном положении и нуждается в помощи Трампа, а тот помогает ему, мешая Украине.

Хертлинг ссылается на оценку ISW от 12 октября: украинские контратаки замедляют российское наступление на нескольких важных направлениях, ВСУ отвоевывают позиции под Лиманом, а у Купянска россияне бросают в бой крупные силы без подтвержденных продвижений. По данным CSIS, которые приводит генерал, Россия с начала вторжения потеряла около 1,4 миллиона человек убитыми и ранеными, из них до полумиллиона - убитыми. Еще в сентябре ISW отмечал, что с марта 2026 года ВСУ удерживают россиян почти на нулевом чистом продвижении и ликвидировали выступ севернее Лимана, который угрожал Славянску.
