The Day I Began to Love Bono

Corona winter, 2021. Christmas Eve. Minus 17 degrees.

I sat on my balcony and watched this performance from St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin via livestream. Bono, Glen Hansard and their friends. The Christmas Busk, which couldn’t take place on the streets because of Covid, had found another, almost unreal setting for that night.

Bono sang “Running to Stand Still.”

That was the night I began to love Bono.

And Glen was right there in the middle of it.

Glen Hansard & Friends · St Patrick’s Cathedral

Five years later, that place would take on a meaning none of us could have known then: Glen would be farewelled at St Patrick’s Cathedral.

My last evening with him was in Prague on May 9. An evening about more than music – about Europe, Charter 77, Ukraine, resistance and freedom.

Glen Hansard – his final concert in the Czech Republic

After his death, the extraordinary network this man had woven became visible. Dublin filled with musicians and memories. And Eddie Vedder, carrying that connection forward:

Eddie Vedder – Dublin

Nine days later, Karen Eivers took my text Passing Through and made it part of her radio show, Musical Medicine on BayFM 99.9.

Perhaps that is the real story:

A person dies. Their relationships do not.

On Christmas Eve 2021, I sat freezing on my balcony, watching Bono and Glen in St Patrick’s Cathedral.

Five years later, everything leads back there.

It was a holy night indeed. @glenhansard @u2 @dublinsimoncommunity @remembering.glen.hansard @glenhansardmemorial @daily.dose.of.musical.medicine @dekker.brookln @liamomaonlai

My love for Bono started somewhat earlier. In 1984 I went to a U2 show in Sydney . Didn’t know much of them but came by a ticket and was so blown away I went out and bought a ticket to go again. Every tour since I’ve been to see them, sometimes more than one night. Once I went 3 times . The Love comes to town tour with BB King. I worked for years for Qantas at Sydney airport and I got to escort the band once and got to chat to Bono and get a treasured photo with him. He was lovely. Running to Stand Still has always been amongst my favourite tracks 💚

Bono sang „Running to Stand Still“. Bono – Running to Stand Still · St Patrick’s Cathedral Es war der Abend, an dem ich Bono zu lieben begann. Und Glen war mittendrin. Glen Hansard & Friends · St Patrick’s Cathedral Fünf Jahre später bekommt dieser Ort eine Bedeutung, die damals niemand kennen konnte: Glen wird in St Patrick’s Cathedral verabschiedet. Mein letzter Abend mit ihm war am 9. Mai in Prag. Their relationships do not.
