“My IUL is linked to the market” doesn’t mean my money is invested directly in the stock market.
So… what does indexing actually mean?
In certain Indexed Universal Life policies, a market index, such as the S&P 500, can be used as a reference for determining how interest may be credited to the policy.
Here’s a simple example:
Index increases 10%
Policy has a 7% cap
The indexed credit could be 7%, rather than the full 10%.
And if the index has a negative year, the policy’s specific floor and crediting rules determine how that affects the indexed account. The index return itself is not simply deposited into your policy.
That’s why understanding the index, cap, participation rate, floor, and crediting method matters.. not just hearing the words “market-linked.”
Did you know an IUL can reference a market index without directly investing your policy cash value in that index?
Comment “INDEX” if you want me to break down caps, floors & participation rates next.
