This is just an appreciation post for @kooldjredalert. I watched DJ Red Alert’s retirement announcement and felt a little sad at first. Then it hit me how much joy it’s been to hear him on the radio for over four decades. Red has played a huge role in my life. He was part of the BDP Crew with @teacha_krsone, Scott, me, and others. He was the first to play BDP’s first two singles, “South Bronx” and “The Bridge Is Over,” on the radio. The first rap song I ever performed on was a promo for Red called “The TR 808 Is Coming,” and he opened his @98.7kissfm show with it every Saturday night for over two years. I’ll never forget walking into the station with an acetate of “Call Me D-Nice.” I went into the control room and played it for him. He took it straight to the program director, Vinny Brown, and told him it was a hit. Vinny added it to regular rotation on the spot, at a time when they weren’t playing much rap during the day. That song exploded in New York. I used to stand in the booth watching him spin, wanting to be just like Red. It’s safe to say I owe part of my success to him for always believing in me and showing up with support when I needed it. I took this photo of Red in the dressing room on our first BDP tour with Eric B and Rakim, Kool Moe Dee, Dougie, Biz, and Ice-T called the Dope Jam Tour! What a memory. Red, thank you for everything you’ve given to Hip-Hop culture. Congrats on your retirement from radio, and on more than 50 years of DJing. And happy early 70th birthday! Much love. 🙏🏾
