Risk reduction and harm reduction are not the same thing, but they work together.
Risk reduction focuses on preventing harm before it happens through education, treatment, recovery support, safer choices, and healthy coping skills.
Harm reduction focuses on keeping people alive and connected to care when risk already exists. This includes tools like Narcan, fentanyl test strips, wound care, HIV prevention, and referrals to treatment and recovery services.
Harm reduction is not about encouraging drug use. It is about reducing overdose deaths, preventing disease, and creating opportunities for people to access treatment, recovery, housing, healthcare, and support. Research from CDC and SAMHSA shows that harm reduction programs save lives and help connect people to treatment and long-term recovery. (CDC)
You cannot recover if you are not alive. Harm reduction protects life. Risk reduction helps build a healthier future.
