Kenny Scharf (@kennyscharf) arrived in New York in 1978 and became a defining figure in the city’s East Village scene alongside Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Drawing from cartoons, television, and the visual language of mass culture, Scharf developed a Pop Surrealist world filled with playful creatures and Day-Glo color. His work has always treated joy as a serious artistic tool, bringing art out of the gallery and into everyday public life. For ‘Scary and the Dancers!’, presented by Art Production Fund (@artproductionfund) and Rockefeller Center (@rockefellercenter), Scharf transforms Midtown Manhattan into an oversized version of that world. A 34-foot inflatable creature anchors Center Plaza while six dancing figures draw on the familiar imagery of air dancers and seasonal lawn decorations. The project extends across the campus through murals, lobby installations, and more than 100 artist-designed flags. He even tagged the glass at the top of the Rock (@topoftherocknyc), allowing his characters to interact with the iconic New York skyline.
