Film industry, culture, history, art and AI: A packed program for Germany’s Minister of State for Culture and the Media, Wolfram Weimer, during his visit to Los Angeles.

For our team at the German Consulate, the visit was an opportunity to bring together many of the people and institutions we’ve built strong relationships with over the past years — and to move forward on issues that matter to Germany.

One very special moment for us: Minister Weimer presented Dr. Justin Jampol, founder and director of the Wende Museum, with Germany’s Federal Cross of Merit. Justin has been a close friend and trusted partner for many years. His dedication to preserving history and making it accessible across generations is extraordinary. And when the devastating wildfires threatened Villa Aurora in January 2025, Justin stepped in to help its team protect and preserve valuable cultural heritage. We couldn’t be happier to see his commitment and contributions recognized with this well-deserved honor!

The film and entertainment industry was another major focus. At the invitation of the Motion Picture Association (MPA), Minister Weimer met with senior representatives of major film studios and streaming companies for a frank and substantive discussion about film production in Germany, its international competitiveness, ongoing efforts to reform the funding system and opportunities for closer cooperation. Strengthening these connections and promoting Germany as a location for international productions has been a priority of our work in LA.

Art, history and innovation: The program also included visits to the Getty Villa, Getty Center, Thomas Mann House, Lucas Museum, Dataland and Ronald Reagan Presidential Library - reflecting the breadth of German-American connections and the growing importance of technology and AI for the creative sector.

From strengthening Germany’s ties with the US film industry to supporting cultural institutions and exploring new opportunities at the intersection of art and technology, this visit touched on several of our key priorities in LA. And it gave us plenty to follow up on with our partners in the weeks and months ahead.

Toll. Und seine Rede in der Villa Aurora war fantastisch.
