By 1820, the Declaration of Independence was already showing signs of age. To preserve it, Secretary of State John Quincy Adams commissioned printer William J. Stone to make a full-size copperplate engraving of both the text and the signatures in facsimile. Completed in 1823, the plate was then used to print 200 copies on parchment. In a response to a request from Parade Magazine in 1981, President Reagan jotted down his personal reflections on the Fourth of July. Within his handwritten note, he wrote, “In recent years I’ve come to think of that day as more than just the birthday of a nation. It commemorates the only true philosophical revolution in all history. Oh there have been revolutions before and since ours but those revolutions simply exchanged one set of rules for another. Ours was a revolution that changed the very concept of government.
