250,000+ objects have been waiting for a permanent home. The wait is almost over!

@latimes broke the news this week: the Wende is expanding to Hawthorne with a $16-million living archive. A place where historic objects are stored, studied, and shared. Where scholars, artists, and the curious public share the same room.

For #AskAnArchivist Day one of our archivists, Anya, shared her favorite object in the archive!

Ksivnik (ксивник) was a staple of a Soviet hippie wardrobe. Ksivnik got its name from the Russian jargon for documents - “ksiva” that hitchhikers carried with them. Most hippies in the Soviet Union traveled cashless out of respect for the road (and out of lack of funds). This ksivnik with an embroidered image of John Lennon comes from the Wende’s Soviet Hippie Collection.

🚨🚨🚨Closing weekend alert! Two exhibitions end Sunday, October 11, at 5 p.m.

Enrique Martínez Celaya: The Sextant centers on a sugarcoated reproduction of the modernist house the artist's father built in a Cuban coastal village during the revolution.

Anton Roland Laub: Mobile Churches in Ceausescu’s Bucharest shows the seven churches that were lifted onto rails, moved, and hidden behind housing blocks while Ceausescu demolished one third of the city’s historic center.

The Wende Museum is open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Our parking lots are closed Saturday, October 10, so consider rideshare or allow extra time to find parking.

The Sextant is made possible by generous support from Alicia Miñana and Rob Lovelace. by @wendemuseum

Applications are open for the Wende Museum and Thomas Mann House Student Forum 2027, a monthly discussion series for undergraduate students.

Political and ideological division is growing and authoritarianism is rising around the world. The forum gives students a place to study these changes and learn to navigate them. Topics under consideration include the crisis of truth, the contested independence of academic and cultural institutions, and the power of narratives to shape how we understand change.

Students prepare each session with a small team from the Wende Museum and @thomas_mann_house, working from a few texts, podcasts, and videos. The final meeting is a public workshop or panel discussion with specialists in the fields the group covered. Students also learn how cultural programming works at two Los Angeles cultural organizations and attend exclusive events at both.

The forum meets at noon on the last Friday of each month, starting in January 2027, at the Wende Museum's Community Center in Culver City. Lunch and drinks are provided.
