Always In Bloom, Benaiah Matheson, 2026
Created for Sandal Ward as part of our Yorkshire project, and now on show in What Art Can Change at The Art House, Wakefield.
Staff told us the ward lounge felt dark and heavy, and asked for something bright and relaxing. Service users wanted something unique, with bold shapes and colours. Benaiah’s mural now runs across all four walls.
It grew out of workshops on the ward and at The Hepworth Wakefield, where people drew, explored colour and made blue-and-white sun prints on fabric. Shapes, patterns and sketches from those sessions repeat across the walls as small details. Benaiah kept changing the work as he painted, responding to people on the ward, with some service users chalking parts of the design before he painted them in. The result is a mural people can live with every day, with something new to notice over time.
Benaiah is an artist with roots in Huddersfield and Carriacou, Grenada, working across drawing, sculpture, sound and natural materials such as wood, textiles and nutmeg shell to explore how communities pass on knowledge and traditions.
Join Benaiah at The Art House on 28 October for Drawing Stories, a free workshop layering drawings with tracing paper and light to explore memory, place and storytelling. Link in bio.
