The Art House is delighted to welcome @_hospitalrooms to Yorkshire, with a celebratory exhibition inviting us to consider how contemporary art can reshape experiences of care within some of the most complex mental health settings in the UK. Hospital Rooms is an arts and mental health charity that commissions permanent artworks in mental health wards, working with leading contemporary artists and NHS trusts to transform clinical environments. This exhibition celebrates their recent Yorkshire project that brought 15 artist commissions into forensic wards and Psychiatric Intensive Care Units at Fieldhead Hospital in Wakefield, and Kendray Hospital in Barnsley. šŸ”—Ā RSVP to attend the Private View and Drinks Reception through the link in our bio šŸ“…Ā Hospital Rooms opens Wednesday 30 September [Image Description: A close up image of a wall mural by Simeon Barclay of overlayed halftone images of people boxing in bright graphic colours of pink, blue, yellow and green.] #TheArtHouse #HospitalRooms by @_hospitalrooms

Held: Braiding Care, Kedisha Coakley, 2026ā  ā  Created for Kendray Ward as part of our Yorkshire project, and now on show in What Art Can Change at The Art House, Wakefield.ā  ā  Kedisha began with collagraph printing, pressing synthetic braided hair into the plate. Hair carries so much of identity, touch and cultural memory, and its braided impressions were digitally mirrored and repeated to form a continuous pattern across the ward.ā  ā  The result recalls woven textiles and flowing waterways, a rhythm of continuity that reflects networks of care, resilience and belonging, and the belief that healing is supported by environments that make us feel held.ā  ā  Kedisha is a multidisciplinary artist based in Sheffield whose practice spans film, installation, printmaking and sculpture, exploring decoloniality, Black cultural memory, archives and ecologies of care.ā  ā  ā šŸ“… What Art Can Change, open until 31 October 2026, The Art House, Wakefieldā  ā  #HospitalRooms #10YearsOfHospitalRooms #ArtAndMentalHealth #ContemporaryArt #ArtInHospitalsā  by @_hospitalrooms

Always In Bloom, Benaiah Matheson, 2026ā  ā  Created for Sandal Ward as part of our Yorkshire project, and now on show in What Art Can Change at The Art House, Wakefield.ā  ā  Staff told us the ward lounge felt dark and heavy, and asked for something bright and relaxing. Service users wanted something unique, with bold shapes and colours. Benaiahā€™s mural now runs across all four walls.ā  ā  It grew out of workshops on the ward and at The Hepworth Wakefield, where people drew, explored colour and made blue-and-white sun prints on fabric. Shapes, patterns and sketches from those sessions repeat across the walls as small details. Benaiah kept changing the work as he painted, responding to people on the ward, with some service users chalking parts of the design before he painted them in. The result is a mural people can live with every day, with something new to notice over time.ā  ā  Benaiah is an artist with roots in Huddersfield and Carriacou, Grenada, working across drawing, sculpture, sound and natural materials such as wood, textiles and nutmeg shell to explore how communities pass on knowledge and traditions.ā  ā  Join Benaiah at The Art House on 28 October for Drawing Stories, a free workshop layering drawings with tracing paper and light to explore memory, place and storytelling. What a lovely afternoon to host Darren Henley CBE and Hannah James from Arts Council England yesterday. The sun shone for us, making the beautiful array of artwork around Sunflowers Court at Goodmayes Hospital even more striking. Thank you to Niamh White MBE and Tim Shaw at Hospital Rooms for showcasing the project and walking us through the artworks, where service users and artists had come together to workshop ideas about what art they wanted in and around the wards. "It brings people together". "The workshop was a great experience". "It's such a pleasure seeing the art bring joy and making people smile". The project demonstrates the impact of creative arts in rehabilitation and in improving people's experiences while receiving care. by @_hospitalrooms
