Dear City, you can't forget your roots. KCMO is my hometown that raised me, but I was born in Brooklyn, which is why the Brooklyn Bridge is on the cover of my album.
My parents met in Brooklyn in 1975 working with a camp for inner-city youth and proceeded to get active in many ways, which included attending college, tutoring students, camp counseling, raising three kids, etc. My father also got into community organizing helping to advocate for improvements to neighborhood grocery stores, getting the city to replace street signs for neglected city blocks, and raising funds for housing developments in blighted areas. Eventually, three hip hop heads were born, the oldest (@sikestyle), middle bro (@joelshafer), and finally me in the fall of 1986. We lived at the corner of E. 18th St & Courtelyou Rd. in Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY before moving to Kansas City, MO but the habitat of BK remains in me. It always just feels right whenever I get visit New York. 🗽
