The ICC and its officials have been collectively awarded the European Parliament's 2026 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, announced on 22 October.
In its press release, the European Parliament recognized the Court as "a crucial actor in the global fight to end impunity", and stated that "the EU must protect the global mechanisms for international justice and accountability."
But for Professor Triestino Mariniello, an international law expert on the legal team representing Gaza victims before the ICC, the prize risks being a symbolic gesture. In his view, it lets Europe project solidarity while masking its failure to offer the court any real protection against US sanctions.

No fig leaf is big enough to cover the inaction and indeed the hypocrisy of the EU ,for allowing the dismemberment of international law .Thank you @triestinomariniello for all your commitment ,to ensure that justice is upheld and not treated like an ''A la carte menu , from which some states can pick and chose what they like ",as a judge of the ICJ said,during the trial against Israel for genocide.
