THINKING PALESTINE | Palestine Fights Back | Sept 2026

"The Palestinian struggle is often presented, by well-meaning individuals, in a way that fails to account for the Palestinian people themselves. This comes as a result of commentators, journalists, and even academics failing to grasp domestic Palestinian politics and account for the sentiments of the population.

Arguing that Hamas was really created by Israel permits defenders of Palestinian rights in the West to work their way around dealing with why Hamas became the most popular movement in Palestine. While the PLO and the Fatah organization that led it do not have a history originating in charity/social groups that received funding or a permit to operate by the occupying authorities, they were created outside the borders of occupied Palestine. Hamas grew out of the occupied refugee camps of the Gaza Strip."

🔴 Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, has provided new testimony describing continued physical abuse, sleep deprivation and threats by Israeli prison guards, according to a written statement provided by his lawyer.

The testimony followed a visit by his lawyer on Sunday, August 30, during which Abu Safiya said guards continued to beat him on different parts of his body, including sensitive areas, using their hands, feet and batons.

He also said prison authorities deliberately deprived him of sleep by creating noise and using loudspeakers during nighttime hours.

According to the testimony, Abu Safiya was assaulted following an earlier visit by his lawyer and was subsequently threatened and warned against passing information to his legal counsel about the conditions of his detention.

Abu Safiya has been held by Israel since December 2024 without charge or trial.

The new testimony comes as Physicians for Human Rights Israel continues legal proceedings seeking permission for an independent physician to examine Abu Safiya amid concerns over his health.

The organization submitted a request on July 7 for internal medicine specialist Dr. Amit Tirosh to examine him. After permission was not granted, the group petitioned an Israeli administrative court.

The Israel Prison Service recently requested additional time to respond to the petition, while the organization maintains that there is no justification for further delaying an independent examination.

Concerns intensified after Abu Safiya was transferred on August 10 from the underground Rakevet facility, where he had been held in isolation, to the Israel Prison Service medical center at Ramla Prison.

He remained there for approximately one week and underwent several examinations that, according to Physicians for Human Rights Israel, revealed health problems.

The organization said the exceptional decision to transfer Abu Safiya to the prison medical facility itself indicated significant medical needs and strengthened the case for an immediate independent second opinion.

🔴 Saudi warplanes launched 94 raids on Yemen over the preceding 24 hours, Yemeni Armed Forces spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Saree announced, according to Al Mayadeen.

Saree said the attacks targeted civilian sites in the governorates of Sanaa, Saada, Taiz, Hajjah, Amran and Ibb, killing and injuring civilians.

The spokesperson identified F-15 and Typhoon aircraft as the warplanes used in the raids. He said they took off from Saudi Arabia’s Khamis Mushait and Taif air bases.

Alongside the aerial bombardment, missile attacks were launched from the Saudi regions of Najran and Jizan, according to Saree’s statement.

He said the cumulative number of Saudi air raids and missile bombardments against Yemen had reached 1,350 since the beginning of the escalation.

The latest announcement described attacks across northern, central and southwestern Yemen, while separate field reports identified strikes on educational and communications infrastructure.

Earlier on Friday, Al Mayadeen’s correspondent in Yemen reported that Saudi aircraft targeted the Al-Hajar Institute for Vocational Education in Al-Qubaita district, north of Lahj governorate in southern Yemen.

The Yemeni news agency Saba separately reported four Saudi air raids targeting a communications network in Washah district, in the northwestern governorate of Hajjah.

The attacks on the institute and communications network came amid continuing Saudi bombardment across Yemeni governorates.

Al Mayadeen reported that the Yemeni Armed Forces have responded to the aggression and blockade by targeting vital facilities inside Saudi territory.

Their operations also target concentrations of Saudi-backed troops on Yemeni soil, according to the outlet.

The Yemeni Armed Forces are additionally imposing a blockade on Saudi maritime navigation in the Red Sea, as the confrontation continues alongside the air raids and missile attacks described by Saree.

🔴 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu allegedly sought to use an incident involving an Emirati passenger aircraft to draw the United States into another war against Iran, Press TV reported Thursday, citing an unnamed regional source familiar with the matter.

The source stated that the operation was discussed and finalized during Netanyahu’s visit to the United Arab Emirates three days before Wednesday’s incident involving Flydubai flight FZ1073. According to the source, Netanyahu traveled with senior military and intelligence officials.

Press TV’s source said discussions involving officials from several Arab countries focused on devising a false-flag operation that could be attributed to Iran. The alleged objective was to push US President Donald Trump into renewed military action against Tehran.

Anadolu news agency also covered the allegations, identifying Press TV as their source. Its report attributed the account of the purported operation, the discussions in the UAE, and the intended consequences for Washington to the same unnamed regional source.

The source linked the alleged plan to Netanyahu’s concern about upcoming Knesset elections, claiming that his coalition could fail to secure the majority needed to form another government under current circumstances.

“In that case, after being removed from the premiership, he would have to spend the rest of his political life behind bars,” the source told Press TV.

The source further said that Netanyahu hoped to use his influence over Trump and the White House to provoke a full-scale war against Iran.

According to the account, he sought to use “America’s weapons, economy, and declining credibility” to repair his own “dire political situation.”

The accusations followed Iranian criticism of Netanyahu’s meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei warned Wednesday that hosting Netanyahu would not bring favorable consequences, urging Abu Dhabi to “learn from the last war, stop igniting wars.”

🔴 Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called on Sunday for Israel to launch a war in the occupied West Bank modeled on its genocidal assault on the Gaza Strip.

“We should do there what we did in Gaza,” Smotrich told the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

The far-right minister also repeated his call for the Palestinian Authority to be dismantled as Israeli forces intensified military restrictions, raids and attacks throughout the occupied territory.

Smotrich’s remarks explicitly invoked Israel’s genocide in Gaza, which has killed nearly 74,000 Palestinians and wounded more than 175,000 since October 2023.

The Israeli offensive has also damaged or destroyed approximately 90 percent of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure, leaving much of the enclave uninhabitable and forcing most of its population into repeated displacement.

Despite a ceasefire that took effect on October 10, 2025, Israeli forces have continued carrying out airstrikes, shootings and other attacks across Gaza.

More than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed and approximately 5,000 wounded in Israeli ceasefire violations, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Smotrich’s call to replicate that campaign in the occupied West Bank came amid a continuing escalation by the Israeli army and illegal settlers against Palestinian communities.

Smotrich also renewed his demand for the dismantling of the Palestinian Authority, which exercises limited administrative and security control over parts of the occupied West Bank.

The PA was established under the Oslo Accords to administer designated Palestinian population centers during what was intended to be an interim period.

Israel, however, maintains overarching military control throughout the occupied West Bank, including over borders, movement, security and large areas of Palestinian land.

Smotrich and other members of Israel’s far-right government have repeatedly attacked the PA while advocating the expansion of illegal settlements and permanent Israeli control over the occupied territory.

🔴 Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir published a video Sunday showing himself inside the cell of Palestinian prisoner Hassan Salameh, whom Israel has held since 1996.

“I want to kill you. I want to execute you,” Ben-Gvir told Salameh in the footage, according to Anadolu news agency. Salameh, who is from the Gaza Strip, is serving multiple life sentences following an Israeli conviction over attacks in the 1990s.

In a post accompanying the video, Ben-Gvir said he would work to carry out death sentences against prisoners such as Salameh if he became defense minister in the next Israeli government. He also pledged to advance what he called “voluntary migration” from Gaza and the occupied West Bank, a term he has repeatedly used for proposals to displace Palestinians.

Ben-Gvir has said his Jewish Power party would demand the defense and justice portfolios as a condition for joining a future government. Israel’s Knesset election is scheduled for October 27.

The Prisoners’ Media Office condemned Ben-Gvir’s appearance before the cameras with Salameh. In a statement reported by Al Mayadeen, it described the confrontation with a shackled prisoner as “a showy scene that reveals the occupation mentality based on targeting and abusing prisoners.”

The office said the threat “constitutes a direct incitement to commit a crime against prisoner Salameh,” who it said had endured harsh detention conditions for years. It held Israeli authorities responsible for his life and safety and urged international human rights organizations to intervene.

The office also described the video as “cheap political and electoral posturing,” accusing Ben-Gvir of using threats against prisoners to appeal to extremist voters. It said Salameh’s appearance showed the effects of starvation, torture and systematic medical neglect in Israeli detention.

The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ Affairs likewise condemned the video. Its head, Raed Abu al-Hummus, described conditions inside Israeli prisons as “organized terrorism” and called for international action, Anadolu reported.

🔴 Massive Attack musician Robert Del Naja was arrested under the UK Terrorism Act during a pro-Palestine demonstration outside the Labour Party conference venue in Liverpool on Saturday.

Del Naja, also known as 3D, was sitting peacefully on a bridge holding a sign that read, “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action,” when police approached and arrested him on suspicion of supporting a proscribed organization.

The British civil liberties group Defend Our Juries organized the demonstration as part of its Lift the Ban campaign, which demands that the UK remove Palestine Action from its list of banned organizations.

More than 200 people reportedly participated in the protest, held ahead of the Labour Party’s annual conference, with demonstrators also demanding an end to British arms supplies to Israel.

Footage published by Defend Our Juries showed police officers approaching Del Naja and telling him that he was committing an offense by displaying the sign.

“I don’t recognize the offense because under UK law, it is actually an offense to aid and abet any private individual or company aiding and abetting genocidal war crimes,” Del Naja told the officers.

When an officer asked whether he knew that Palestine Action was a proscribed organization, Del Naja responded: “I don’t agree with the proscription.”

A second officer then informed him that he was under arrest for supporting a banned organization.

Palestine Action was proscribed under the UK Terrorism Act in July 2025. The designation made membership in the organization or expressions of support for it a criminal offense.

Del Naja’s detention was one of several arrests reported during the demonstration outside the conference venue.

Hours before his arrest, Del Naja appeared in a recorded message alongside Palestine Action co-founder Huda Ammori and prominent human rights barrister Michael Mansfield KC.

The three appealed directly to Burnham to reverse the ban on Palestine Action and halt the use of anti-terror legislation against people protesting Britain’s involvement in Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

“We ask you to stop what is obviously wrong,” they said: “Deproscribe Palestine Action.”
