In this recent episode of @hubermanlab @michael.pollan explores collective consciousness and the possibility that the brain may not simply produce consciousness, but could somehow receive or channel it.

Psychedelics, and other practices such as meditation, can produce experiences of ego dissolution: we can remain conscious without the usual sense of self. This temporarily weakens the boundary between “I” and “other,” creating a profound sense of connection — that perhaps we are more alike, and less separate, than we normally perceive ourselves to be.

This resonates with Carl Jung’s idea of the collective unconscious: a deeper layer of the psyche that, he proposed, is shared across humanity and expressed through universal archetypes, symbols and patterns.

There’s an interesting resonance between these ideas: when the ordinary sense of “me” becomes quieter, people can sometimes experience something that feels larger than the individual self.

Consciousness remains one of our biggest mysteries. So maybe the most scientific position right now is also a humble one: keep an open mind.

This relationship between consciousness, the self, and psychedelics has been central to much of my research, and is something I explore further in “How Psychedelics Work”. If you’re interested, comment BOOK to pre-order.

Re panpsychism, Rumi said "Consciousness sleeps in minerals, dreams in plants, awakens in animals, and becomes aware in humans."

not only is consciousness as mystery, so is matter, so is nature. It literally IS Mystery. I have usually explained it this way: what a patriarchal mindset does in history continuing is separate dynamic wholes, eg light and dark, life and death etc, and usually conceptualizes one side its thinking has abstracted as being superior to what it thinks is inferior, the other movement of the whole. In patriarchal myth it very does so with masculine and feminine where the former is related to light and reason and spirit and the latter to darkness and chaos and matter. it also will 'disappear' one 'side'. Thus when we enter the scientific era, 'spirit' is rendered an idea from a superstitious past! So I have explained know and not-known/unknown like this. THAT we can never 'know everything', as there must always be an underlying mystery, and that this is the nature OF nature...I encourage people to watch this video, The Terrifying Qunatum Theory (see link). it is mindblowing and shows how nature, the universe, reality is inherently mysterious. I LOVE this and can live with it. To experience wonder there needs to BE mystery. I watched this yesterday. Quite mindblowing: The Terrifying Quantum Entanglement Theory That Breaks Reality https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hV-blfKF4Po

Mind Control: A Practical Framework for Awakening and Conscious Creation doesn’t discuss psychedelics but it was forged through our journey with plant medicine. It’s an amazing book for psychedelic prep and post-integration. If you’ve read the book, we are now offering the beta course is free for early adopters.
