A serious note on being social:

I’m actually very social. I can talk to pretty much anyone, regardless of age, background, profession or where they come from. What I find strangely difficult is building a life around people in one place.

Everyone is always making plans. “We should do dinner.” “Let’s catch up next week.” “I’ll call you when I’m back.” And then three months pass and you realise you haven’t actually seen each other.

I’m guilty of it too.

I also have this weird relationship with Instagram. I’ll meet someone once, have a great conversation, follow them, and then quietly know there’s a very good chance I will never see this person again. Yet somehow we’re now connected for life through stories of each other’s brunches.

It’s funny because travelling feels completely different. You meet someone in another country, realise within an hour that you have the same sense of humour, the same curiosity, the same energy, and suddenly you’re spending the next three days together like you’ve known each other for years.

There’s something about being away from your usual routines that makes people much more open. You’re both there because you want to be there. Nobody has to schedule a catch-up six weeks in advance. You just say, “What are you doing tomorrow?” and somehow tomorrow becomes a plan.

Back home, everyone seems to be perpetually busy, perpetually planning, and somehow perpetually unavailable.

Maybe I just need to travel more.

Or maybe I need to stop accepting plans that begin with “we should definitely meet soon.”

I so relate to this feeling. Started traveling a bunch domestically and internationally in my 40s and 50s. After I retired I spent 3 months traveling the US, then back to Cali, then back to Ohio for 3 months, side trips to Spain, Vegas, Florida Keys, NYC. What makes me sad is those people I met on the road who I only get to see occasionally when our paths happen to cross. But there is such joy when they do! I’m traveling to @itaitacasitas in Costa Rica in December which I only know of because I met their wonderful host @mollyhavingfun in an airport and we shared a burger and a beer! Life is pretty miraculous. But there are moments I just need to be still. To feel like I’m home. And sometimes nowadays I wonder where that is. 🥹
